The story behind the painting

Exploded hair #1

We'd just moved to Amsterdam from Vienna. November. Rain - like in that song. Moving somewhere new gives you this strange permission to try new things. This was the first time I painted hair like this.

Amsterdam

Not enough color for November

In Vienna I'd been doing abstractions, mostly to decorate the place we lived. But Amsterdam in November is grey on grey on grey. I needed something to actually stimulate my sense of color again.

Hairdryer inspired

I wanted to try merging abstraction with portrait, a self-portrait. Around then I saw a hairdryer in a color combo I couldn't stop thinking about: pink and turquoise.

Street objects

Look closer

Walking around Amsterdam with all that in my head, I came across a bike and Vespa accident. Nothing serious — but there was debris on the street, including a piece of the Vespa. Exact color I needed. That became an eye. Once I started, I kept picking things up off the street for the rest of the piece. The beer in it is one I actually drank myself, then stuck straight onto the canvas.

Human in the loop

It was 2023 and everyone was suddenly talking about AI. So I put an actual generative model diagram behind the figure. The kind with a human still in the process. That's where the title comes from.

They say I copy Basquiat

People call this one "Basquiat, but cheaper." I'll take it. Though the artists actually in my head while I was painting it were alive and working right now — Terry Urban, Jack Kabangu, Eser Gunduz. Original's sold, if you were wondering.
