The story behind the painting

Every human needs an elephant

But I'm in the Netherlands, so it's an Olifant.

New city, not enough color

Amsterdam

New city, not enough color

We'd just moved to Amsterdam from Vienna. November. Rain, like in that song. In Vienna I'd been doing abstractions just to decorate the place we lived. Amsterdam in November is grey on grey on grey — I needed color again, and moving somewhere new gives you a strange kind of permission to try things you wouldn't otherwise.

The human

Found objects

The human

Started with a self-portrait — first time I ever painted hair exploded like this. By then I was picking things up off Amsterdam streets, and one day walked past a bike and Vespa accident. A piece of the Vespa, the exact color I needed, became an eye. The beer in the painting is one I actually drank myself. Behind the figure sits an actual generative model diagram — it was 2023, everyone was suddenly talking about AI, so I put a human back in the loop.

The elephant

Olifant

The elephant

Kept picking things up. Kept the same colors. Needed a subject to sit next to the human, and found it at Amsterdam Zoo — no cages I could see, elephants playing with a huge ball, clearly happy. You can watch them straight from the street.

Look closer

Look closer

The human's eye is a piece of a Vespa. The elephant's wearing something like a ski mask — or a respirator built out of cans. Neither is obvious at first glance. Give them a few weeks on the wall and you'll start finding both.

Human in the loop. Dirty world.

Human in the loop. Dirty world.

Same streets. Same year. Same guy picking things up off the ground both times. One's got AI hiding behind him. The other's just a Dutch elephant playing with a ball. The originals are gone too — they live on someone else's wall now in Manchester.

Your print, up close

Close-up of a black rectangular frame or tray corner with a pink and white patterned textile visible inside, against a neutral beige background.

I paint after office hours in Amsterdam. Office plankton by day. What started as a way to escape routine turned into a body of work hanging in living rooms, man caves, nurseries and veterinary clinics across Europe and beyond.

FAQ

Is this an original painting?

No — this is a high-quality canvas print of the original artwork.
It’s made to preserve the energy, texture, and character of the piece in a more accessible format.

Will it look like a real painting?

From a distance — yes. Up close, you’ll see it’s a print, but the depth, colour, and surface detail are designed to feel alive, not flat.

What size should I choose?

If you want the piece to define the room — go bigger. Smaller sizes work as accents, larger ones carry the full impact of the work.

How long does delivery take?

Your order is produced within 3 business days and shipped from the closest location (EU, UK, or US).

Typical delivery times:
– Europe: 5–7 business days
– UK: 5–7 business days

What if it arrives damaged?

I’ll replace it. No discussion.
Just send a photo and I’ll take care of it.

Can I return it if it doesn’t fit my space?

Yes — you have 30 days to return or exchange it. No pressure, no risk.

Is it ready to hang?

Yes. It arrives framed and ready to hang straight out of the box.

Can I request a custom size?

If you need something specific, reach out — I’ll see what’s possible.

Can I request a custom painting?

Yes — I take on a limited number of commissions. Each piece is created in my style, not copied or adapted from other works.
